ALWAYS PITCH AN ANGLE |
---|
Always PITCH AN ANGLE: an angle is what gives a piece its uniqueness, its edge! Are all of the following easily identifiable? IDEA -- working title? THEME -- new twist? FOCUS -- the aspect most likely to get reader attention? SLANT -- what makes this appropriate for a particular publication / market / genre? ANGLE -- your unique approach to the subject? [P.S. Yes, angle, slant, and hook are sometimes used interchangeably. The angle is the special or unique approach you will take to a subject that sets it apart from other similar articles on the same topic.] Size it up against the competition -- the editor will. Why? The major publishing houses receive 3000-5000 queries, book proposals, and unsolicited books a year. [© 2003 by Elaine Wright Colvin, Writers Information Network]
